As a tribute to Lance Armstrong’s inspirational fight against cancer and his attempt at a sixth Tour de France win, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Nike are launching the Wear Yellow Live Strong campaign featuring yellow wristbands.LAF project manager Britney Puryear tells us more about the campaign and the idea behind it.
How many have been sold?
We have sold more than 2 million wristbands on the LAF website alone. With our Web site and retail outlets combined, we are getting very close to 6 million sold. All proceeds benefit LAF programs that help people living with cancer.
The response to the bracelets
The response has been huge. It seems that everyone wants a yellow wristband. We have seen a huge jump in sales during the Tour. Our web traffic has increased by about 275 percent this month and donations have increased by about 30 percent. Last week alone we sold more than half a million wristbands on the LAF website. People are wearing wristbands all over the world. Several celebrities are wearing them including Matt Damon, Ben Stiller, Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, Bruce Willis, Sheryl Crow, Jaime Fox, Shawn Colvin and Derek Jeter. Jay Leno is giving them to his audience members and Tom Hanks and Angelina Jolie were wearing one at a Cannes Film Festival party. Lance and his entire team are wearing them, of course, as well. Several of Lance's competitors, including his main rival now, Ivan Basso, are wearing them. Basso's mom is in the hospital because of pancreatic cancer.Where to purchase a wristband other than the LAF website
Retailers include Niketown, Nike outlets, Finish Lines, Foot Lockers, bike dealers, running stores and May Department stores including Foley's, Hecht's, Lord and Taylor and Filene's.Why yellow?
For Lance, yellow is the color of hope, courage, inspiration and perseverance, as well as the color of the leader's jersey in the Tour de France. We found that many cancer survivors identify yellow as a color of hope, courage, inspiration and perseverance as well. "Live Strong" is Lance's mantra and the foundation believes that in your battle with cancer, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis we provide the practical information and tools you need to live strong. With that being said, it was a natural decision to make the wristbands yellow with the message "Live Strong" engraved on them. For more information, visit the Lance Armstrong Foundation at www.laf.org or www.livestrong.org.
