NEWARK, N.J. -- A man who sometimes wears a Yankee cap during his holdups struck a Union, N.J., bank Wednesday, making that the seventh bank robbery he carried out in just the last two months, according to investigators.FBI agents are now working with local New Jersey police departments to try to nab the suspect, who has gotten away with thousands of dollars in cash. The FBI said the suspect’s robbery spree began on June 3 with the holdup of a Lakeland Bank branch in Caldwell. Since then, he has hit three Sovereign Bank branches in Parlin, East Brunswick and Linden. He also robbed a Wachovia Bank in Middlesex and the Rahway Savings branch in Rahway. Wednesday's robbery targeted the Investor's Savings Bank, agents said.
This latest bandit is described as a white man in his late 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with light short hair, balding on top. Investigators said he "usually wears a hat." He could be called the "Yankee Cap" bandit because pictures from a recent heist show him wearing a Yankees team hat. In his holdups, agents said he passes a note claiming he is armed with a gun, although no one has reported seeing him brandish a weapon. This latest bank robbery spree comes after New Jersey FBI agents captured the "Mad Hatter" bank robber, who hit as many as 17 banks last year. And in recent days, the FBI has arrested accused serial bank robber Christopher Chidichimo of Middletown. Agents said he had robbed banks in Wall and Lakewood before a relative turned him in.The FBI asks anyone with information to call their tip line 973-792-3000.
