16 Dogs Rescued; 7 Charged In Animal Fighting Ring

Authorities say 16 pitbulls were rescued from a Bronx basement that housed an illegal dogfighting ring. One of the dogs died on the way to a shelter.Raw Video: Dogs Seized Police say seven people were arrested in a raid at a building on East 179th Street between Morris and Creston avenues. They face charges of animal fighting, participating in animal fight, promoting gambling and own or possess an animal for fighting.
Authorities say the dog that died was seriously injured when found during the Saturday night raid. City Animal Care & Control center director Mike Pastore tells the Daily News in Monday editions that the animal was in poor condition "with bite marks and blood all over it." The surviving pitbulls are in ACC custody.The following men were arrested: Lauritz Acoy, 41, of the Bronx; Israel Cuevas, 31, of North Brunswick, N.J.; Alexander Estephane, 44, of the Bronx; Eric Boyce, 33, of the Bronx; Juan Toledo, 38, of Paterson, N.J.; Alterick Mason, 29, of Newark, N.J.; and Darnell Walker, 34, of Newark, N.J.Officials did not know what would happen to the animals.
