District of Columbia Orders Emergency Crane Inspections

POSTED: 4:12 pm EDT May 30, 2008
UPDATED: 4:16 pm EDT May 30, 2008

The District of Columbia is conducting emergency crane inspections in the wake of New York City's construction crane collapse.

Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs spokesman Michael Rupert said all construction companies and developers in Washington are being asked to call the agency immediately to schedule precautionary inspections. Officials said there are about 40 cranes currently operating in Washington.

The director of Washington's regulatory agency, Linda Argo, says the risk of a collapse there is unlikely because of the city's building height limits.
