Noel's Blog: Paterson Sympathizes With Both Sides

By News 4 New York Reporter John Noel

POSTED: 11:39 pm EDT May 8, 2008

"I can't support it, but I can understand it."

That comment from New York Governor David Paterson came one day after more than two hundred people were arrested at six different locations around New York City.

They were among the thousands who protested the not guilty verdict in the trial of the three police detectives involved in the 50-shot fatal Sean Bell shooting.

This afternoon the governor met with Bell's fiancée, his parents and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

The governor, who in the past participated in acts of civil disobedience, including demonstrations after the 41 bullet police shooting of an unarmed Amadou Diallo, said while he could not condone yesterday's disruptions he understands the frustration Bell's loved ones are feeling.

Paterson did promise to explore the possibility of new legislation aimed at improving police practices and accountability.
