A man who gained notoriety -- and became a folk hero to some -- after he went on the lam following a 1986 shootout in the Bronx with police officers who had come to arrest him for five murders, was killed in prison, corrections officials said Thursday.
Larry Davis, serving 25 years to life on a murder conviction in an unrelated case, was stabbed to death around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday during a recreational break at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, said Erik Kriss, a spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services.
Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch said he will not cry over Davis' death. Click on the video to your right to watch a WNBC interview in which Koch calls Davis a "miserable, murderous individual."
Ken Maxwell, a former high ranking FBI official, remembers talking Davis out of a tense hostage situation.
He spoke with WNBC reporter Tim Minton about the three tense hours he spent speaking with him.
