Police: Baby Locked In Car While Sitter Goes To Bar

POSTED: 1:41 pm EST December 23, 2007
UPDATED: 9:07 am EST December 24, 2007

Police have charged a Long Island woman and her boyfriend with leaving an 18-month-old baby alone in a freezing car while they went to a bar.

Two women walking to a nearby store called police about 1 a.m. Sunday after noticing the boy locked in a 2003 Chrysler about 1 a.m. When police arrived, they found the child's caretakers inside the nearby Hamaca Bar, according to a press release.

Police learned that the child's mother left the baby with a babysitter while she traveled upstate to visit relatives, according to the release.

Investigators estimated that the child was alone in the car for at least 25 minutes. Temperatures outside were about 32 degrees and the car was off. The baby was unharmed and released to the care of a grandparent.

Ruth Campos, 19, and her boyfriend, Chyan Gilbert, 21, were charged with endangering the welfare of a child, police said. Both were held on $5,000 bond Sunday night.
