Exonerated Convicts Speak Out Against Capital Punishment

Two men who have been exonerated for murder are using their experience to speak out against the use of capital punishment.

Jeffrey Deskovic spent 16 years in prison for the 1989 murder of a Peekskill High School classmate.

Douglas Warney spent a decade behind bars for the murder of a Rochester man.

Both men were innocent and were eventually freed when their cases were overturned.

Now, they are joining New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty director David Kaczynski to talk about their wrongful convictions.

The appearance Thursday comes just days after New York's highest court overturned the last death sentence in the state, upholding a 2004 decision declaring the state's 1995 capital punishment law unconstitutional.

Last week, The Innocence Project released a report saying New York state has the poorest record in the country when it comes to convicting people for murders they did not commit.

The report says seven New York inmates have been freed on post-conviction DNA evidence, more than any other state.
