The Coast Guard called off its search after dozens of reports of a fireball hitting the water near the New Jersey shore late Saturday.

People reported seeing mysterious lights off Normandy Beach in Ocean County. The Coast Guard launched a search, but turned up no signs of debris on the water. The Federal Aviation Administration reported no missing aircraft.

Coast Guard spokesman Nyx Cangemi suggests the sightings could be the result of the Aurigid meteor shower.

Astronomers had predicted a possible light show over the western parts of North America on Saturday because of the meteor shower.
