Rose Morat, 101, meets with New York's mayor and police commissioner.

Feisty Mugging Victim Asks Mayor, 'What's Your Next Step?'

Grandmother, 101, Wants Better Security For City's Elderly

In March, 101-year-old grandmother Rose Morat was attacked in Queens.

Since then, Morat has wanted to talk about security for the elderly with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. On Friday, she got her wish, NewsChannel 4’s Monica Morales reported.

"You better take a good picture of me," she admonished a group of press photographers.

"I’m very proud of him and that he took precious time away from New York to meet with me," Rose told reporters.

She was pleasant and excited. But her mood was in stark contrast to the fear and pain she experienced just last month when she was beaten up and mugged in the lobby of her own apartment building.

"This is where he mugged me," she said, speaking to Morales in that lobby. "I didn’t fall down; I held my ground. But I saw stars."

Rose was hit over and over again by a suspect who has yet to be apprehended.

Later that same day, Solange Elizee was also mugged, and police said they believed it was the same man.

After that, both women had one request: to meet with the mayor. They both got their wish Friday, each sitting around a city hall table with Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Rose took full advantage of her time with the two officials.

"What’s your next step? Whisper it to me. I’ll tell you if I approve," she told him.

The mayor agreed with this feisty grandmother. Both said they support proposed state legislation that would make it a felony, punishable by up to seven years in prison, to assault anyone over 70 years old.

Rose also asked for more foot patrols in her neighborhood.

"That’s what I think would help. Ask the police commissioner here whether he is listening so we are all on the same page," she told Bloomberg.

Rose does not have political ambitions, but she said she doesn't want people to forget what happened to her.

She told Morales she enjoyed her city hall experience. Rose, it seems, was clearly savoring her moment in the spotlight.
