READINGTON, N.J. -- The final suspect arrested in connection with the shooting death of an FBI agent asked for officers to kill him just before his capture, police said. For almost a day, 22-year-old Francisco Herrera-Genao had managed to elude a 300-officer manhunt.Police said that When the officers finally closed in on him, he had a request: "Just kill me."
Herrera-Genao's alleged accomplices were nabbed shortly after the shooting on Thursday. They were identified as Wilfredo Berrios, 28, and Michael Cruz, 21, both of New Brunswick.Images: Suspect Captured Law enforcement sources told NewsChannel 4's Brian Thompson that Berrios was the alleged ringleader.Sources also said that raids on all three of the suspects' apartments Thursday night turned up automatic weapons, ammunition, a firing range target with bullet holes in it. Pink bank wrapping strips and about $30,000 in cash were also found, sources said.FBI Director Robert Mueller visited Newark Friday morning, meeting with agents and then separately with SWAT team members. Tired and cold, half-naked and caked with mud and twigs after a night on the run in the woods, he was nabbed around 8 a.m. after allegedly trying to steal a car driven by a woman headed to work.Authorities said he approached the woman, who was in her black Hyundai Elantra, as she was preparing to leave her driveway. He banged on the window and tried to force his way inside the vehicle.Panicked, the woman hit the gas and sped out of the driveway onto nearby Route 22, where she pulled over about a quarter-mile away and called police."He started hitting on my window, trying to get in my car," Beverly Hardon told NewsChannel 4, her voice quivering as she spoke. "I went so fast up that driveway."Officers raced to the scene with a K-9 unit that quickly tracked the suspect to a wooded area and "flushed him out of the woods into the waiting arms of police," State Police Lt. Gerald Lewis said."Just shoot me. Just kill me," a shoeless, shirtless Herrera-Genao told the state trooper who approached him, State Police Superintendent Rick Fuentes said.Authorities had been searching for the New Brunswick man since Thursday morning, following a shooting outside a bank in Readington in which FBI agent Barry Lee Bush, 52, was killed. Bush may have accidentally been killed by a colleague, authorities said."Preliminarily, information suggests the agent may have been fatally wounded as a result of the accidental discharge of another agent's weapon during a dynamic arrest situation," the FBI said in a statement. An FBI task force had been tracking the men for several weeks following a string of bank heists in the area. Pedro Ruiz, acting special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark office, said the suspects captured Thursday had two assault rifles and a handgun with them but didn't fire when FBI agents confronted them outside a PNC Bank branch.Manhunt For Man Involved In FBI Agent Shooting Most Annoying Songs Of All-Time The Worst Movies Of All Time Body Washes Up In Pacific Beach (Warning: Disturbing Images) Mechanic Finds Cat In SUV's Engine Coyote Drops In On Downtown Quiznos Musicians Who Have Battled Cancer Celebrities Who Own Restaurants Child Stars: Where Are They Now?
