High Carbon Monoxide Levels Causes Building Evacuations

POSTED: 6:46 pm EDT March 18, 2007
UPDATED: 7:03 am EDT March 19, 2007

There were some rattled nerves in Brooklyn Sunday after high carbon monoxide levels forced hundreds of residents from their homes and sent several people to the hospital, NewsChannel 4 reported.

Fire officials said 58 buildings were temporarily evacuated and power was shut off on 55th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues in Sunset Park.

In all, seven people had to be treated for exposure to carbon monoxide including two emergency workers, according to NewsChannel 4.

Two women were found unconscious in separate apartments and were taken to Jacobi Hospital. There is no word on their conditions.

Officials said they believe burning wires in a manhole emitted the toxic gas, which spread into the buildings.

Power was restored to the area at about 4 p.m.
