PATERSON, N.J. -- Authorities said Sunday the man accused of killing an off-duty Paterson police officer is one of a growing number Crips street gang members in New Jersey.Teddy Charlemagne has been charged in the Jan. 7 shooting death of Officer Tyron Franklin, who was killed during a botched robbery at a restaurant.Authorities said a tattoo showing numbered dice on Charlemagne's right hand indicated which Crips "set," or group, he belonged to.
Charlemagne was arrested Tuesday in an apartment in Irvington in what authorities consider Crips territory.Experts on gang activity said the number of members of West Coast-based gangs in New Jersey has doubled over the past several years. Most of the newcomers belong to the Bloods -- the Crips' main rival -- who have surpassed the Latin Kings as the state's dominant gang
