Low-Cost Alternatives To Memory Foam Mattresses
If you woke up this morning feeling like you slept on a bed of nails, you may be thinking of buying a new mattress--perhaps even one of those expensive memory foam mattresses.Memory foam mattresses are supposed to respond to the heat contours of your body and shape the mattress accordingly. Some of the pricier ones start at $1,000 and up. But now some manufacturers are making pads out of the same material, but at a fraction of the cost.
You can mail order them or purchase at a store. Mattress toppers come in sizes twin to king, with the king-size price range the costliest."We looked at five toppers, and they started around $70 and went up to $259.95 for the most dense one," said Sara Schaefer Munoz of The Wall Street Journal. The toppers are made of memory foam, which allegedly reduces pressure points and provides a more comfy sleep.NewsChannel 4's Roseanne Colletti checked in at the famous Algonquin Hotel to check out three of the five mattress toppers sleep-tested by the WSJ.First they showed us the Cuddledown Memory Foam Comfort Pad, retailing at $209 for a king."As you can see, it has ridges and groves for pressure points," said Schaefer Munoz. "There is one drawback -- it doesn't go all the way to the end. They say that's so the sheet will fit around it, but if you're tall, your feet hang out."Their pick for best value was Healthy Foundations 2 Memory Foam Topper, at $220 for a king."It has two inches of foam and about four pounds of density per cubic foot," said Schaefer Munoz. They also tested the LL Bean Supportek Foam Mattress Topper, which retailed at $229 for a king. They thought it was hard to unpack, but proved comfortable. It is the only one to include a cotton cover. The Macy's Charter Club Visco 6-Zone was priced at $69.98, making it the least expensive. It was also the thinnest and didn't make much difference in comfort.Macy's said the pad is value priced well below the $200 selling price of all other pads compared, and that it has other toppers at higher price points. For best overall, they selected the Sleep Warehouse Sensus Topper, king size priced at $259.95."It has the highest density of all tested," said Schaefer Munoz. "Five pounds per cubic foot. In fact, our sleeper overslept on this mattress topper."If you do purchase a mattress topper, you should know they do need to be aired out for a few days. They have an odor, but the manufacturers say that will go away. Also, you will have to invest in extra-large fitted sheets in order to cover both the mattress and the topper.
