If the summer sun has added years to your skin, you may be trying to diminish the damage with one of the new anti-aging creams.Consumer reporter Roseanne Colletti recently completed an at-home trial of some of the products and is here to tell us whether they worked."We wanted to know whether price makes a difference, and if so, how much and what kind of results you can expect," said Colletti.
We asked a panel of six volunteers to consistently use just one product. We started with a picture, a digital photograph of each of our six volunteers -- cosmetologists and other staff members at the Capri Institute in Paramus, N.J.Each volunteer was age 35 and older. Some had a skin care regimen, others did not. But each had special areas of concern."Wrinkles around the eye area especially, I also have sensitive skin, roseacea around my cheeks … those are my biggest issues," said volunteer Bernadette Policastro."I'm starting to develop wrinkles and hyperpigmentation is my big problem," said volunteer Jennifer Choi. The women's photographs were analyzed by computer software in a system with an accuracy claim of more than 90 percent."It analyzes their skin for six different kinds of skin characteristics, spots, pores, wrinkles, evenness, and porphyrines," said Jim Larkey of Canfield Imaging Systems."The sunspots are stating to appear and I'm very concerned about those issues right now," said volunteer Roxanne Conroy. We handed out six popular anti-aging products -- one to each volunteer. Here's a breakdown of each product's prices:Avon' s Clinical Laser System, $32 Lancome Paris Resolution, $70 Freeze 24 -7, $115 Prevage, $115 Simple Solutions Serum and Night Renewal, $135 Strivectin-SD, whose ads proclaim, "Better than Botox," $135 Dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman said consumers shouldn't make decisions on price alone, but on ingredients. Some of the products promised immediate improvement, others required a longer period of time.We asked each volunteer to use her product for six weeks, then we returned for another skin analysis. Not all saw a reduction in spots.According to the computer analysis, most of the women improved, though not in all areas.Jaliman advises realistic expectations, regardless of the hype. However, each of the volunteers said she thought her skin looked better,"I saw an improvement right away with exfoliating part of it," said volunteer Donna Haberstroh, who used Freeze 24-7."I can tell it immediately peeled my own skin out right away and I have improved 100 percent," said volunteer Poon Nasa, who used Lancome."I used it primarily around my eye area, so that's really where I've noticed the difference," said Policastro, who used Strivectin-SD."Right away my skin was smoother, softer," said volunteer Robin Maggio, who used Simple Solutions. The manufacturers told NewsChannel 4 results will vary with the individual and all advise the continued use of sunscreen.
