Man Accused Of Helping To Steal Personal Information Online

POSTED: 5:19 pm EDT June 23, 2008
UPDATED: 8:45 pm EDT June 23, 2008

A former employee of a disgraced Internet gambling site helped steal the personal information for at least 150 people as part of an identify theft ring, federal authorities announced Monday.

Suspect Patrick Kalonji, who had worked in the credit card department of BetOnSports.com, was charged with conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, said the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Kalonji, 27, a native of the Republic of Congo and recent Canadian resident, was arrested in Philadelphia Sunday and faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted, said U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia.

Kalonji is charged with sharing personal information -- like names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers -- with other ring members for various frauds, such as making purchases over the Internet.

Kalonji pleaded not guilty in Manhattan federal court Monday and was remanded with the chance to apply for bail at a later date.

Last spring, BetOnSports.com had pleaded guilty to federal racketeering charges and had agreed to cooperate in a case against the firm's founder and others, said the U.S. Attorney in St. Louis. The gambling Web site, which had operated out of Costa Rica where Kalonji had been based, shut down its U.S. business in 2006.
