Nearly a year has passed since his being voted off of America's top-rated talent showcase "American Idol," but Sanjaya Malakar still manages to grab himself a piece of the generous, albeit fading, singer spotlight. Most recently, a smiling Malakar appeared in Glendale, N.Y. On March 9, he was signing copies of the book "Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul," in which a story of his "American Idol" experience appears. The book "Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul" also features stories involving other popular ex-contestants.
And like the other ex-contestants, Malakar continues to sing in front of live audiences. In fact, a bat mitzvah was the site of the curly-haired crooner's latest performance. Just prior to his "Chicken Soup" signing, Malakar performed for more than 300 guests at the event. But the bat mitzvah performance was no hired gig. Twelve-year-old Rachel Lader, for whom the celebration was held, donated all of her gifts to charity. So that's where the infamous Sanjaya is today. The question remains, however, "Where will Sanjaya be in the future?"Apparently, he'll be sticking with the charity events. On April 6, Malakar will appear alongside his sister, Shyamali, to sing in "A Motown Evening." The performance will take place in Bothell, Wash., and all proceeds will go to "The Music Program," which allows professional musicians to work alongside young music students.Malakar may not be touring like Clay Aiken or Carrie Underwood, but his cause is a worthy one -- even those who dislike his voice want him to keep singing.
