Herbie is one of the happiest kids many people will have the opportunity to meet. The 12-year-old enjoys a wide range of music, including Bach, Beethoven and Harry Belafonte.
Whether it’s the alphabet song, a gospel choir or a classical composition, it’s all good music to the jovial boy.So when the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music offered him a piano lesson with Etsuko Tajima, it was the ultimate play date.“That was fun,” Tajima said of their time together. “He was really into piano.”Herbie’s social worker, Kawin Long, bought him a keyboard for Christmas.“He plays that all the time,” Long said. “He’s busy listening to all the types of music at home.”Herbie loves math, the color red and being outdoors, he said.“He’s been diagnosed with autism, but despite the diagnosis, he’s very intelligent,” Long said. “He mirrors everyone. He mirrors a regular child to a special needs child, but he learns quickly.”She said Herbie loves to read and recite Bible scripture. The self-reliant 12-year-old also enjoys selecting his own clothes and getting dressed up. He has loads of curiosity and energy to match.Herbie has lived in good foster homes, but his social workers want to find him a permanent adoptive family.“We want him placed in a very loving home,” Long said. “A very attentive home because he needs attention."And the family that adopts him will get far more than a music lover.“You have to meet him,” Long said. “You would really have to be around him to see the love and affection that he gives.”What Happened To These Child Stars?
